Was it worth waking up before the sun? Absolutely. The iPhone isn’t great at nature photography from far away, but it’s absolutely Whale Wednesday in Okinawa! The humpbacks are here for another month mating and giving birth before they head back to the Bering Strait. There is no krill here for them to eat, but the waters are safe so they like hanging out here.  I saw 4 of them jump today. Probably all males desperate to impress the ladies.

The tour company asked us to submit all of our tail pictures because each tail of a whale is like a fingerprint and completely unique to them! There are between 1,000 to 1,500 whales in the waters around Okinawa now and there are entire science teams who go out daily to track and study them! I sincerely hope my photo helps them!

Love seeing the humpbacks!
There was a cool curriculum we did in Grade 5 (I think) that was all about the humpbacks going up and down the west coast.

We ended up going on a little impromptu field trip one day to walk over to one of my classmate's houses b/c their parent had called the teacher to say there were grey whales passing by lol
