when I used to teach 18-20 year olds about digital discourse and I’d ask them how they felt about privacy online, they always said that it “didn’t matter” because they have “nothing to hide.” privacy isn’t about secrecy, it’s about freedom. who benefits from you thinking privacy only matters for secrecy?

How is it that this is consistently the first answer from literally everybody in the first world? What is an experience or thought experiment that makes those people change their mindset?
