Because most teams don't ship multiple builds a day to public. It's an OTA from Expo. So the App Store version hasn't changed. It won't update until you restart. So people hear about a new feature, see they have an updated version in the App Store and are confused.

My understanding is @warpcast is updating the app faster than what it takes Apple to receive the update to then put it on the App Store. Would be cool if it auto updated within the app. cc @dwr.eth

It does automatically update if you don't do anything. This just allows you to force the update now to get latest. This in app update isn't going through the App Store, it's a js bundle update allowing the team to ship instantly and multiple times per day. Something not possible through App Store.

Some apps force you to update with a notification to App Store as well. Agree could be better without, but there’s trade offs in development

In my opinion, this is a very clever solution. Quick updates and fixes ready with a restart, without waiting for the app store. I agree that the user should not have to deal with updates in general, but this is no different from a restart for iOS/Windows cumulative updates. Pretty hassle-free
