Now that I'm looking into communities it actually seems a nice new feature for X. Never heard of it before.

yeah i had big hopes for it when it first launched

i guess its a spin on fc channels for them

current implementation detail: Xeets in the Community are not private, but they do not appear to show up on your timeline. 

Which maybe(?) makes it safer for future cyberstalkers, as long as you trust the community gatekeeper
