On 13 February 2025, 109 civil society organizations, companies, and cybersecurity experts, including Global Encryption Coalition members, published a joint letter to the British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper calling on the UK Home Office to rescind its demand that Apple create a backdoor into its end-to-end encrypted services.

Yes I don’t disagree on fighting back

But it wouldn’t surprise me if the whole request originated from the UK learning that another major power already had gotten Apple to comply and they’re like “oh, we want that too!”

Could we ask companies to make a statement that they have not been compelled to create backdoors by any government? Would any do it? 

Would feel safer knowing that backdoors don’t exist at all vs knowing that at least the UK doesn’t have one

We don't, and by the nature of the laws as they tend to be written, we can't. So instead, we fight back, by making systems that can't be bent to the will of state actors that wish to destroy privacy on the web.
