I tried to do this but the connection UX to mobile wallet kept erroring out.

Could we do this as an offchain public attestation instead so it's gasless?

For sure, we can. We are definitely planning on certain things being offchain attestations (like comments). And eventually there will be a web app, so you won't run into problems like that there. Not sure what the problem is right now.
