What am I missing in the article? It’s mentioning a partnership with Мобильные ТелеСистемы — I’d assume they have a relationship with the government (who doesn’t in Russia, you’re kind of forced to), but what about the deal means what you say it means?

mts is virtually owned by russian government and now tg gives the government mapping between phone numbers and tg accounts then you can match phone number to other data from other sources and boom you have a mapping between tg account and your home address

ah, gotcha. this is one of the things i dislike about signal – though not the worst of things. at least signal has E2EE for group convos, even if an inefficient model.

To be fair it’s possible to connect your Telegram account exclusively to an on-chain number on TON network. Not cheap but should put a patch to this “problem”. It seems to me though that the weak link here are phone numbers… tbh can’t believe this does not happen with Meta’s Whatsapp…

The same is true for email addresses. And we will be having the same conversation about EVM addrs/ENS names in 20 years unless we change the way all these common public identifiers are used to correlate all our data. I s'pose that's possible if everything from here forward were built on platforms like Quilibriuam. 🤷

but also if we read between the lines of the announcement, how certain are we that the phone number stuff is the full extent of it?
