Channel member migration plan

1. Last week, we previewed the upcoming channel changes

2. We want to ensure that existing channels have a set of members on Day 1

3. We’re proposing automatically converting active followers → members for channels.

4. We’re optimizing for something straightforward and pragmatic, not perfect.

5. We’re looking for feedback on this proposal.

re, the coming channel changes and day one members:

>for channels /with moderation enabled/ any user who was liked by a mod or mod-bot will be auto-migrated to the "new" channel.
>dan is asking for feedback but this sounds workable to me.

what popular channels are /not/ moderated, if any?

if they hadn't done this, channel mods who /will/ are advantaged over those who /won't/ -- this helpfully flattens the starting conditions so mods who /cant/ put in the sweat equity aren't tacitly expected to.

it's a small technical change and i expect less entropy, not more.

I believe it’s a wait and see thing.
Is it going to be chaos or a hassle? Maybe maybe not. In general the channel changes are a huge step forward. But change is always hard, people generally don’t like it.

since june, yeah. if you were chosen to participate in the Main feed, you'll be automigrated to the permissioned feed. ezpz.

in permissionless environments /quantity/ isn't really useful.

How many channels will die because of this?

Farcaster is my first and only social media | I'm mostly JK | Host /venting /burrfrens | mod /impact /byegary

depends on why/ how those channels are growing.

not all growth is good growth. in fast, bad-growth should be /assumed/ pending evidence to the contrary. abundant bots are the background condition/ assumption.

Popular channels will be fine. 
Growing channels will have a hard time. 
A good step forward for the platform anyway.

then /replyguys will default to including everyone that Warpcast algo included in channel main.

so what the new channel looks like depends on who those users are (ie, qDAU, bots, noobs, whatever).

The reply guy is not moderated I think

i only wish they had launched permissioned channels originally instead of even /attempting/ to solve the spam problem. we wasted a few months with that.

I am moderating /nature manually, hoping to retain as many qCasters after the switchover. The proposed changes look solid.

it's not for the worse, that much i'm certain of. even if many original channels die, this change is still necessary and always was.

I'm glad I am not managing a large channel! 😬
I only have my channel /fercaggiano as a place to cast about my personal things. I never saw channels as subscriptions, and I am not sure how this will go. But I have to believe the changes are for the better.

likely, yep. and people who think totals matter will be mislead, as usual.

I’m super interested to see how this impacts bot activity, if at all, and if we’ll see a drop in total daily casts as a result of the changes.

not really. channels are permissioned. with the right people permitted to join, moderation isn't necessary. this change obsoletes in-channel content moderation; choose the right people instead.

So moderators will have to curate the channel when the changes are live, right?

IF auotmod liked your channel cast anytime after June, you'll be grandfathered into the new permissioned channel.

So once automod likes my cast i automatically get migrated to that channel

depends on the channel. some channels will make it trivially easy to get an invite. others won't.

the best channels won't be easy to enter. for good reason.

New people will find it very difficult to join the channels if they don't receive an invitation. 
if they don't receive an invitation, is that right

I think the rules are fine. I would have done worse, earlier, with less opportunity for feedback/ bitching.
