i likened 'Gerry' to all-rounders and they tend to not get called to be involved in activities outside work, just because they didn't fit the 'specialists' tribe at work.

huh that's interesting the gerry-type i have known have usually had lots of different informal contacts across the org and were in fact usually the people who were not part of the ostensible in-group who were nonetheless invited to outside-of-work things
