Paying a fortune for a "leased line", and hosting your own rack of servers (dns, smtp, imap, apache, postgres, etc). Tape drives for backups.

Oh, yes. The first apps I worked on used Oracle Forms or something like this, that allowed to generate web interfaces. Oracle was charging *per user* which was crazy for a web app.
