When thinking about decentralized social networking, the Fediverse is taking the approach of having the content travel (I post from Mastodon, you read from Threads). I think a much better model is one where the social graph travels: when I log in on a 3rd party website, my social graph is there.

There's some parallel with banks (I send you money, you receive them), and crypto (I log in to any app and all my transactions and history is there).
