Had surgery on my hand yesterday and as a result won’t be typing for a while. This has caused me to really try voice typing/dictation for the first time. Turns out I really like it and I may stick with it after this. Funny how sometimes constraints can breed innovations.

Last week at an event I got to hear Michael Dempsey from Compound talk about "in-distribution" (familiar) and "out-of distribution" (novel) ideas, and how AI plays into this. He wrote it up as an essay yesterday (with a great lede): "The human condition is romantic. We tightly guard and appreciate the idea that we are all unique, each with our own novelty running through our veins and shooting out of each electrical charge from our neurons firing. We as humans are connected because we have both thought what others have thought and only think what no others have ever thought. The concept of some form of heightened superintelligence threatens this. LLMs broadly take the collective thoughts of humanity and shine a mirror on those writing prompts, spitting out an answer that could lead to a given person learning that perhaps so many others have thought everything we have thought. Hello Farcaster friends. I’m back after spending the last ten days on assignment in Ukraine. I was very moved by the struggle of the Ukrainian people to fight for their independence, as well as their toughness, warmth and humor. It was quite dangerous at times and it is really not a joke to be in eastern Ukraine but I will definitely be coming back in future as I felt an emotional attachment to the people and place. I hope Americans will also at least consider the struggle of these good people when deciding their own elections next month as the result will have an impact on them. I encourage those who can to visit Ukraine and especially fellow Europeans whose solidarity they really need and appreciate. I will share more pictures later.

gm. my farcaster feed is beginning to resemble twitter, and not in a good way. squabbling, posturing, and misinformation abound, none of it funny, some of it dangerous. i won't help with that. so, instead of unfollowing anyone specifically, i've made the choice to reset my follows and exit most channels.
