What even is an institution? https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2022/12/30/institutions.html Not sure I have amazing new insights, other than that this is a complicated muddle, but sometimes recognizing the muddle is the first step to stepping out of it!

Organization with continuity and influence was my initial definition before reading the post. Orthogonal: the Internet eroding the power of institutional credentialism is a trend I’m optimistic about.

I also think "time" contributes to recognition (or definition of) institutions.

Odd starting point there, polling people on mastodon. 🧐 Two key sources for me: 1. Powell and DiMaggio book esp preface https://books.google.com/books/about/The_New_Institutionalism_in_Organization.html Douglas North, Institutions https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/jep.5.1.97

Going through this at YC to some extent though I think the salient feature of YC is actually an attempt at a more accurate prediction of future elites. In the anti-merit debate there is a lot of discussion of removal of tests, when the real goal should be more predictive/arguably fair tests.

I see institutions as mission-based communities. Sometimes the mission is profit, but it can be anything really. A hot dog stand can be an institution! Sole individual might be the "lengthened shadow" at first, but long-term institutions (like communities) are aggregate of relationships formed around/within them.

Investigating definitions deeply will almost always end in some form of reductio ad absurdum. Ironic that institutions are the things meant to keep us out of said madness. They are predictable anchors for our collective narrative.

An institution is something that institutionalizes like an institution, is the category theorist’s answer!

An institution is a programming center for the walking dead currently imo. Bring back apprenticeships.

"then the New York Times is not an institution - no one argues that it's literally essential" People do in fact argue that the NYT (as proxy for reputable journalists) are essential for a functioning democracy! Its supposed to be the light that shines in the darkness of corruption.
