One way to look at the possible effects of deepfakes in politics is to look at "shallow fakes" that have been possible for a long time. For example, this screenshot purporting to be a "you're free to say whatever nasty stuff you want" whitelist for twitter. I actually have no idea if this is real or fake, but there definitely are some people who are treating it as real, imo without sufficient evidence. And yet, the effects of things like this are pretty bounded. This feels like a plausible outcome for deepfakes in politics. The smart people know not to trust a politician's statements without confirmation on official channels, and less smart people get tricked, as they do today with shallow fakes. If something fake goes viral, Community Notes can help on the margin in making it clear that it's fake. Most normies don't actually look at this stuff in real time, and so the effect ends up not too bad. This is the strongest case for not being too worried. The place where I am *more* worried about deepfakes is...

... financial scams. This is an area where many people have no existing defenses - their family members desperately calling them saying they really need a big pile of money quickly. Or the corporate equivalent of the same. This is the reason I wrote this article: https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2024/02/09/securityquestions.html Though we really need a much stronger concerted education effort in this regard. Also much better authentication across the stack.

Fakes, whether deep or shallow, are ‘bottom-up’ and to your point fragile in the face of collective intelligence. The real threats are top-down, like editorial bias by authoritative sources.

Really we should’ve been doubting the authenticity of video and photo evidence and the framing its presenters in formal and informal proceedings introduce, both intentionally and unintentionally, by doing things like introducing into evidence clips and crops of originals Reduced trust has always been warranted

The fact that the majority of the accounts on that list get away with the shit they do does make it seem like its real tbh. The fact that libs of tiktok can get away with doxxing and getting their followers to harass people is insane

Idk is this because people are lazy now or just less educated in general. Because stuff like this can be proved very easily if the person who is saying the statement if they have any proof to back their arguments. Other than that. It's just a person farming engagement from less educated folks

Sometimes, the fakes are able to create enough fear for people to spread. Misinformation works on the human's innermost emotions.

interesting take. Reminds me of when my wife wakes from a dream and is angry at me for something I did IN HER DREAM! The ultimate deep-sleep fake. But her anger is evanescent. Hopefully you're right about deep fakes. 50 $DEGEN

I’ll start being concerned about deep fakes, when real politicians stop being a parody of themselves. Same reason as why they have given up making “Black Mirror” episodes. It’s bad enough as is😒

Life is just getting more and more complex everyday. As we get more advanced, it rarely cuts out steps, we end up having to learn more and more just to keep up. I don't think there's an answer to this currently. For those of us that can inform others, like you do, might be the only option.

A lot of this high tech AI can make statements from prominent politicians and rich and famous seem very very real, and what is even more concerning is the speed in which it accomplishes it.
