One way to look at the possible effects of deepfakes in politics is to look at "shallow fakes" that have been possible for a long time. For example, this screenshot purporting to be a "you're free to say whatever nasty stuff you want" whitelist for twitter. I actually have no idea if this is real or fake, but there definitely are some people who are treating it as real, imo without sufficient evidence. And yet, the effects of things like this are pretty bounded. This feels like a plausible outcome for deepfakes in politics. The smart people know not to trust a politician's statements without confirmation on official channels, and less smart people get tricked, as they do today with shallow fakes. If something fake goes viral, Community Notes can help on the margin in making it clear that it's fake. Most normies don't actually look at this stuff in real time, and so the effect ends up not too bad. This is the strongest case for not being too worried. The place where I am *more* worried about deepfakes is...

... financial scams. This is an area where many people have no existing defenses - their family members desperately calling them saying they really need a big pile of money quickly. Or the corporate equivalent of the same. This is the reason I wrote this article: https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2024/02/09/securityquestions.html Though we really need a much stronger concerted education effort in this regard. Also much better authentication across the stack.

i witnessed one of these in real life a few years ago at a gas station. elderly woman was at a bitcoin ATM with an envelope full of money (10k) talking on a cell phone. something was off so i approached and she said her grandson was in jail. it took quite a bit of convincing her that it wasn't real and there was no AI involved at all.

yep, faking a relative's voice by AI is super much easier nowadays, having safe phrases with family sounds smart.

the example of the "security question" in the blog post is really good and I'll definitely consider this to introduce in my social circle

Absolutely, the whole financial sector is going to be massively affected by deepfakes being used for fake IDs & documents, personality impersonations and can result in complete chaos in the corporate and banking sector. We have been working on this problem for some time now. It's important to understand that a "social factor", something like you proposed "security question" is ultimately required. Anti-Deepfake Technology like ZK-based provenance or AI detection alone cannot solve this.

"The smart people know not to trust a politician's statements without confirmation on official channels" - this becomes problematic when official sourced deny true videos if it doesn't serve their current narrative.

How to identify the scam because I am currently needing a donation to my mother for an operation, but how can I prove that I do not want to deceive anyone and that it is really a request for help from the entire crypto community?

In Athens, GA, AADM created a movement that is synchronized purposefully with onchain projects. Your thoughts over the years on small circles of trusted humans protecting wallets. Your idea for small circles to use key phrases to prevent financial harm next levels your thoughts. We are creating a new network in Athen with 7 yrs of infra behind it to transfer ownership of an open song studio and put a sign in the front yard. "A century old house owned by 21 people". Your guidance on protecting wallets is how we are protecting the investment fund wallet. Thank you so much I will pass this to our network!

using pre-agreed code words seems very simple, yet it's pretty hard to break into. it's a straightforward system that relies on mutual understanding, but without knowing the exact terms, outsiders find it nearly impossible to decipher. good read! 50 $degen
