I don't think you're being fair. Given new information, it recalculates. It holds user input as a high confidence source, but that's how they build a user-facing product. The "excellent point" is just it being overly polite.

Sorry, should have read the question more carefully (maybe me and it have similar failure modes). Still, it gave you a solution that covered both this, and the classical problem. Adding the requirement for a minimal amount of steps makes Claude fail, but in a different manner.
