Monarchies should skip a generation (so, go from grandparent to grandchild). That way you reliably get long periods of fresh blood, as opposed to transitioning from a 95 year old to a 70 year old. (Alternatively, abdicate early Akihito-style)

My vote is for a triarchy consisting of: a kid, middle-aged, and elderly. Could also be fun for the US to have a third legislature chamber based on this, aiming for more generational perspectives and long-term thinking. Thought of this when first hearing about Audrey Tang’s idea of transcultural conservatism.

Monarchs living long enough to have adult grandchildren is a pretty recent phenomenon.

I don’t think fresh blood is the goal of monarchies.

I think it's better to just do something similar to how the saudis do it by slowly transitioning power to the heir (crown prince) from the king as the heir ages. It allows younger blood to take on more responsibilities as they age while still preventing a child from having absolute power.

If de-randomizing to a degree, why not go all the way? ▪️"New Monarch = Closest Heir who is greater than 18 and less than 50." And if de-arbitrizing to a degree, why not go all the way? ▪️"New monarch = Closest Heir* who is good in age and in virtue." *Note: we're all technically related so anyone can be Heir

Similarly the US presidency has been devoid of youth - power passed from boomer to boomer since 1993. Technically Biden is Silent Generation…
