Why is the aesthetic of gyms, even the good ones, always so lifeless? Always black and grey and white everywhere. I want fans blowing air in my face at 12 km/h and a simulation of running along a forest path in a magical fantasy world .... or at least some plants.

I imagine for kids there's also more concerns about liability, which push even further into the cookie-cutter "do something that you can easily defend because you're just copying an existing really common design" direction?

Certainly part of the problem is liability in places like US, so companies like Landscape Structures (https://www.playlsi.com/) appear to have an effective monopoly over local town/county playgrounds on the East Coast (bigger established company, easier to handle liability claims) The other part which is harder to gauge is perhaps either a pipeline of less imaginative people entering town and city planning, and/or the over bureaucratization of the departments in charge of children's infrastructure which means even creative people in these jobs have their hands tied As a new father I've come to realize that local playgrounds are one of our most important third spaces, and I'd love to see more expressive creativity in how these spaces are built https://warpcast.com/vinayvasanji.eth/0xee2aa777

Liability takes the imaginative capacity out of so much of our public realm. On playgrounds, some cities are returning to the wider benefits of self-made play environments - like this one in Glasgow inc. children with saws 😁 https://assemblestudio.co.uk/projects/baltic-street-adventure-playground
