Everything built should be built to not depend on the social layer. No matter how strong and effective the social layer is the probability of it degrading is non 0 and only increases with time.

The problem is that building things to rely solely on incentives is in many cases impractical. A purely in-protocol automated system has no way to "pay people to be decentralized".

"has no way" your mind seems made up about it. The forces at play are knowable quantities. A problem to consider with the virtuous ethereum non-financialized governace is that it lacks analytical transparency. You can't prove that it is not a cartel. It is objectively indistinguishable from decentralization theater.

How do you feel about zk-verified AI agents taking the place of governance to automate “ex-protocol” incentives, “paying people to be decentralized?”

"pay people to be decentralized" - sounds dissapointingly pejorative. It is more so that the degree of decentralization should be a core determinant of value. Centralized things should be cheaper as they come with more unpredictability and risk. No need to pay me, I just have to be able to easily see it for what it is.

There is wrong use of the technology and then there are guiding principles. They don’t always overlap. “Social” here essentially means culture, which we know is naturally deteriorating. Incentives, on the other hand, is a design. Which can be modeled. And is usually not a function of time.
