Everything built should be built to not depend on the social layer. No matter how strong and effective the social layer is the probability of it degrading is non 0 and only increases with time.

thank you for writing this. was re-reading Cryptonomicon and was struck by some of the love that first got me into this. I'm skeptical if gas fees are the sole root cause. Another argument may be the speculative incentives quickly overwhelm any long term thinking

Thanks for providing a concrete list of ongoing projects that fit the ideals. I'm curious to hear more about what it will take for ZK-proofs to become ready for consumer applications. What ~specifically~ is preventing this today? Lack of software packages? Fundamental CS problems? Developer awareness?

Great timing for such an essay. This urge to keep Ethereum close to its original values was one of the main reasons Tim & I built and grew @kiwi

i’ve been in a crypto existential crisis these two years. reframing my industry as “web3” was how i coped with feeling like a sellout. now i feel stubborn again seeing who is outperforming ETH i ask myself “do i want to be right or do i want to be rich?” what are we even doing here if we’re not cypherpunk

Really beautiful post. I would add a caveat: Mainstream onboarding to crypto — prob through non-punk UX — is a crucial practical step. Not only to social integration, but to resistance to government attack, which is coming. A cypherpunk core to a mainstream good is the necessary path imo.

Thank you for highlighting consumer crypto payments. It does feel like I’m the only one talking about it every day. The good news is we’re also building it, and it works great https://x.com/slice__so/status/1738294644746711540?s=46&t=Xycl0VRHjoxf04tpQIdxLg
