I guess it really does depend where in London you are, I don't think this is a citywide problem, though you do need to be vigilant in any major city

The threshold of acceptance for violence has come down a lot. I do not have a point of reference for London but growing up in Paris, there was way more petty crime and « minor » physical violence than today and yet a lot of people insist  that crime has gone up.

my friend recently had an incident where someone stole her bag, jacket, and sweater from the changing room in Selfridges while she was changing! and the police don't even take her case seriously
