I don’t really understand the architecture of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the UAE. What’s with all these domes? It’s like someone built it in Minecraft and just decided to domemax randomly. It looks more like an imagined castle from Aladdin than traditional architecture. The traditional architecture of a mosque in eastern countries was historically a combination of Byzantine form (ie. the basilica) and Persianate fine detailing. Obviously in other regions like North Africa there were not domes at all since neither of those empires were culturally influential there.

Having grown up partially in the UAE, and then even worked in the region briefly after university, my belief is the city 'planners' pioneered a new architectural style called Grotesque (not to be confused with the font, which is actually aesthetically pleasing)
