LOTR, Dune, are large monoliths not EUs

Harry Potter is a monolith with satellites 

Technically the top 3 are a class apart since the have epic arcs with lore infills

Kinda amazing that despite the massive visibility and success, people still don’t appreciate how big an advance EUs are over mere linear sequels as a narrative art. EUs are the Gutenberg press of film, and illuminated manuscript scribes like Scorsese will fundamentally never get it because they’re calligraphers.

Warp and woof structure. 

Warp = plot and character, miniaturized efficiently

Woof = world building with persistent elements but always introduced via plot. 

There’s almost a Moore’s law type thing going on

I think MCU has hit its limit though. Multiverses are an architectural admission of defeat. Star Wars has kept it together on a single timeline. 

Star Trek has also kept it together (excluding the bad Joss Whedon movies). But it feels flatter. Less lore layer. Nothing comparable to Mandalorian type “middle class”

Even fandoms don’t quite get it. Fan wikis map out the EUs but the actual media territory is a lot subtler. The maps are flattened, smashing 3d lore and epic layers together in a lossy way. 

To the extent it’s still a hero’s journey structure, the HJs are like pixels and capable of infinite resampling
