There used to be Cold War era approach to geopolitics called Area Studies that has fallen out of favor. I think it’s time to bring it back. Wikipedia says it kinda got killed by rational choice theory and whiggish neoliberal development studies https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_studies
