As an advocate of Decentralized Identity and Verifiable Credentials (W3C) I’m often asked what can NFTs do that Verifiable Credentials can’t. Still haven’t heard a compelling answer.

People have been talking about DIDs and VCs since 2018, and I still haven’t seen them in the wild. I’m not sure why, given they seem fairly easily to implement. But it’s not a good sign for their future.

DID/VC also have an insider problem: same group of people going at 'standards' for a decade instead of building prod systems. respect their passion but this is a first where 'standards' were built before tech and now the gaps in them show. NFTs are super simple to grok for every1

They’re out there, and more coming. You can back up your metamask settings using DIDs+VCs (Ceramic). Gitcoin passport uses it too. Same with SIWE. Microsoft Entra is a huge product. DHS issuing green cards. CA issuing birth, death, marriage verte. EU all edu degrees.
