As an advocate of Decentralized Identity and Verifiable Credentials (W3C) I’m often asked what can NFTs do that Verifiable Credentials can’t. Still haven’t heard a compelling answer.

NFT/on-chain can be visible through existing wallet infra and look pretty, like my cc sit in my real wallet even if I use Apple Pay. For VC, all wallets will need to build new render ui -- which will take time disclaimer: not saying NFT are a VC replacement

Allow ownership transfer. ERC-721 is just an interface. Utility of it is extended by implementation. They’re two totally orthogonal ideals.

People have been talking about DIDs and VCs since 2018, and I still haven’t seen them in the wild. I’m not sure why, given they seem fairly easily to implement. But it’s not a good sign for their future.

They’re much stronger spec’d and will always be more compatible with more supporting apps / contracts because of that.

don't get me wrong. coming from privacy world I am a DID/VC maxi, but I don't see it getting adoption as long as it stays an inside game w/ ~50peeps playing musical chairs and writing JSON schema data models (aka spec). simpler things like NFT/NTT will keep winning, sadly 🤦🏻‍♂️

NFTs have also entered mainstream consciousness, not easy to do with new tech and it's an underrated feat betting on something else is an uphill battle imo
