Carrier pigeons were immune to spam because you had to give someone a pigeon to enable them to message you.

I don't think I would use a feature that selectively allows you to choose who can message you

"Following + recommended" and other batch-based tooling is fine for me 

But maybe I just haven't yet reached the scale to necessitate the former

experience-building and investing in the future of the internet

But would you use a client that gave you pigeons ?
