For founders who are working on "protocols", why are you building it instead of an app / client?

i used focus mainly on apps / clients. first product i ever built was a wallet (circa 2018). only to realize how many wallets there exist. any idea that i had was likely tried by someone else. so i shifted my focus on things that are truly new. protocols have lots of room for novelty factors.
