What criteria? Good for environment? Good for businesses? Good for carbon credit sellers? You may be interested in Carbonable.io if you don't know this project.

Mainly thinking whether it is good for the Environment, if it ends up also being good for others - businesses / sellers - that is fine but only if the intended result of lower concentration of CO2 / GHGs in atmospere is reached

Voluntary carbon credits are a good incentive to invest in projects that improve things. There's a lot of incentives for companies (and maybe individuals) to offset their emissions. They would probably emit anyway, so giving them the opportunity to offset (at a premium cost) is probably a good way to at least compensate and even perhaps reduce emissions (because of cost but also because of reputational risk and resulting higher awareness of the matter). Emitting less is the way, definitely, but I have lived enough to know we can't ask wealthy people to go there directly.
