I never understood the issue with plastic straws. We have the knowledge to recycle plastic. What’s the problem with them?

Recycling tends to be a virtue signal: - most plastics aren't accepted in recycling programs - straws specifically are excluded from most automated sorting facilities due to formfactor - most "recycling programs" end up throwing away more than they recycle, esp now that China stopped importing our trash - the few who put in the effort to properly recycle what actually can be recycled (not much) don't make up for the masses who just throw it where it ends up as pollution - recycling (esp virtue-recycling) actually increases micro plastic infiltration

the substances they put into paper to not be destroyed by liquids and saliva are much more dangerous than micro plastics if you want to go down that road...

I'm with you as far as paper straws are insane to me as a solution. Was just pointing out why recycling plastic straws isn't a valid path. I don't think we're even remotely aware of how dangerous micro plastics are yet, tho. We're just now starting to acknowledge how much they are penetrating our lives and accumulating in our bodies. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/aug/21/microplastics-brain-pollution-health
