When my oldest (now 17) was born, I said that I hoped/expected college to be totally different (maybe unnecessary) but the time he got to that age. Even then, it was clear that the system was fatally flawed, it was just a question of how long it would take to lose its primary position. 

I was a bit ambitious on my timing, but not far off.

Yep, agreed. I think I’m just interested in more varied options. My two oldest are looking at engineering, so university will be the best approach; my next two will likely choose something more off-the-beaten-path.
