People increasingly want to buy local and organic / regenerative produce (myself included)

Why wouldn’t they want the same qualities in their software?

I often think of entertainment in the same way. 

Why don’t we push to cut out the influence of the distribution houses and publish music and movies/shows on a level that’s local to the artist, the money for the media would go directly to the people involved in creating the “thing” —

Broad strokes, I’ve found people I talk to have no interest in owning their own media or control of their media, and they enjoy the conscience given to them by the Spotifys and Netflixs. 

TLDR — it’s a convenience barrier, it keeps people comfy, and they don’t see why being uncomfortable would be better for them
