"Publishing" is a word that no longer makes sense. When anyone can create and share anything, anywhere, at any time, and to anyone, what does it mean to publish? The role of publishing must take on a new one: curation. Curation is the missing piece of the creator economy. Digital platforms have outsourced curation to algorithms, to everyone's detriment. We need good curators, and we need platforms that reward curatorial work. Only then can we build a creator economy that isn't just predatory. That doesn't just promote the top one percent of creators. Curation is what makes digital platforms worth spending time on.

😍 Tom! I love your writing so, so much. It's OMG-drop-everything-else-to-read-the-new-Tom-Beck-piece levels of brilliant. Web3 is lucky to have you. I'll definitely share, collect, and respond to this as usual, but in keeping with the slowcore ethos I'm going to take some time to ponder and re-read before returning with more substantive comments. 5555 $DEGEN

I read this via email, Tom. Thank you for writing it. Yes, curious curators will be key to driving this digital bus. And a lot more writers getting onboard, too. 11 $degen

Hey Tom, first time reader here. Thanks for your thoughtful piece. I think one useful analogy for curator is "moderator". Although these roles are not exactly similar, a moderator, like a curator, understands the cultural milieu of their community and can take various actions like recommending and removing posts. Separately, I stumbled upon this article — it talks about the same problem but without the "crypto-twist". I think it's worth a read for anyone who enjoyed your post :) https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/future-creation-curation-gavin-guidry-jatte/ Thanks again for your writing!

The #1 role of traditional publishing remains their ability to scale physical print to meet demands with a major infrastructure when the book is a success. The rest is secondary to them. Publishers don’t sell to readers (on the book side)
