Yes, but they don't pay to use social media, and now you're asking them to. Maybe people who already pay for Twitter are ok with it, but Redditors are going to need a lot of convincing to start paying.

While I'm very strongly against online advertising and data brokers, this isn't a valid comparison. People don't see the balance in their bank account go down when they use Facebook, even though it's shoving ads in their face. They perceive it as free.

They are paying but in a different currency: data and Ads (attention).
