Being self employed comes with positives and negatives. You can largely decide which hours you want to work (depending on other life commitments) but the office parties tend to be a bit low-key. What are your favourite things about being self employed, and what do you absolutely hate, or miss from having an employer?

A good thing is that I get to set my own work boundaries. In therapy, having clear boundaries and focusing on your area of expertise is really important. But when I worked for an organization, they didn’t always respect that and sometimes crossed lines with unrealistic or even unethical demands. The downside is not having a stable income and not socializing as much.

That's a good point about unrealistic and unethical demands. There are so many people I know who are regularly asked to work overtime with the expectation that they'll just have to do it and not get any extra pay. This used to happen to me when i worked for an employer, and it's incredibly unfair.

Yeah the system of exploitation is everywhere. When you're standing alone against a group of people, it can feel overwhelming. Leaving is also a form of resistance I guess.

Yep. Always surprises me how normalised it is, though, and how exploitative most people can be when push comes to shove. I don't know why that is, but maybe it's a rather you than me situation, or a if you don't it I'll get punished, so you better do it kind of thing. Happens more in big companies i think.

I agree. I’m thinking about this in the context of group dynamics within companies. I believe this is related to a person feeling insecure and threatened, with a constant fear of losing something or being excluded from the group. This particularly affects those with weak ego strength, whose personal value systems and ways of relating are similar to the group’s. I observe that these ppl tend to adopt the defining characteristics of the group, and in doing so, they lose their unique individuality and a sense of responsibility.
