The only Homeric hero who achieves a happy ending (Odysseus) is “two heads shorter” than the other great warriors, has the smallest army of anyone, and comes from “rocky Ithaka.” I read Homer as suggesting that this partly explains his extraordinary talents: storytelling, craft, and philosophy.
