What is an appropriate response to a stranger‘s „Hi, how are you?“ (e.g. at the super market). I always respond formulaic with „good, how are you,“ but it feels off sometimes.

It’s almost rhetorical but still intended in a polite way. I smile or nod or respond with “good, thanks”.

that works also pretty common: "hey how's it going" "he how's it going" neither party shares how it's actually going
