I don't know if Childish Gambino is supposed to be social commentary or just a pop song, but whatever it is it's not it

I think it’s a real shame you posted this instead of looking for the actual answer. There are many breakdowns of the video This is America, which like Atlanta, is part of Afro-surrealist cannon and there is so many layers of brilliant use of absurdism to discuss important subjects like Jim Crow laws and disproportionate use of violence by police against communities of colour.

This is one of the better ones I’ve seen if you want to follow up on it. And below I’ll link a great video about Atlanta that breaks down afro-surrealism and how it applies to the works of Glover and a number of his contemporaries https://youtu.be/1HfsU07jHis

I'll be honest: I assumed as much and I don't care. Don't like absurdism and think it cheapens subjects. As for afro-surrealism, I can't relate to it and I don't think it makes any effort to have outsiders relate to it — which is fine, art does not need to proselytise to have value. It just doesn't have value to me
