Capitalists have done everything in their power to destroy one of North America’s greatest cities and they refuse to take any of the blame. Sorry in advance to the cities in Texas they’re all moving to now.

The NIMBY aspect is the biggest problem. It prevents high speed rail, affordable housing (which prevents new schools), pretty much everything except for new office spaces. Because single family homes are treated like investments instead of homes. Anything that could slow price increases is vehemently opposed by existing homeowners. It’s ridiculous.

Right, my point exactly! Vitalik wrote about that a year or two ago and I agree.

Every year I used to go to a Palo Alto city councilwoman’s Christmas party. For a decade plus the city was paralyzed by the inability to simultaneously build roads, schools, and housing, because you can’t build 1 without the other 2. Every time they’d try would be an uproar. I think they eventually tied approval of new housing to approval of new office space and got some results.
