does this channel have rules or bylaws? earnest question is there some (written or unwritten) standard? is there a threshold at which one could be banned or removed from the channel? are there moderators beyond @basche42? regardless if it's 1 mod or multiple, are they following some kind of code or just winging it? by contrast, does this channel have ethos or goals? is there some kind of content we explicitly want here? it's a pickle bc recently the definition of "left" has been called into question, so now i gotta wonder, is there an accepted meaning here? or is this space for anyone who self-identifies as left, whatever that means to them? but mostly i ask bc recently ive noticed what i consider to be anti-left content (not inclusive, anticommunist, or pro-liberalism) so im curious about what we intend to tolerate here, and if this is a space i want to participate in or a space i want to leave quietly to be clear, my personal preference would be strong leadership of a few people making strict rules.

I feel like, at a certain size (certainly <1400), community members are entitled to some clear guidelines and shared principles. Otherwise it can be hard to make decisions about our participation like you're saying. ..I also don't think anyone wants to harsh the vibe by playing peoples' court, so having a few simple and easily interpereted rules (both social and/or programmatic) seems appropriate. We can deal with content that make people feel unwelcome or unsafe here, and leave the rest to the debate floor IMO. I'd love to see some deliberation and consensus building around this... Anyone one interested?? I have a Votecaster account and labor to contribute personally. We do have some mods, and some tentative plans for empowering them and decentralizing admin duties. I would guess that group is open to those active members willing and ready to contribute?

a nonexhaustive list of questions i would hope to see answered by these guidelines (or answered by the lack of their presence in the guidelines) - to be clear im not pushing for any of these to be banned, just asking questions - + do we want to be meme-heavy here or is it more for discussion? feels like we are trending more towards memes lately + what groups does this "left" movement target? VBNW liberals? anarchists? nonpartisans? centrists or libertarians or "socially liberal fiscal conservatives"? + for those who aren't fully leftists themselves, what kind of participation is OK? would we allow memes mocking the left? enlightened conversation criticizing the left? trolling about leftist failures without critically engaging? blaming greens for trump? quoting black book of communism? + how inclusive are we? is "r*tard" off limits? what about "blind" or "dumb" or "gay" as slurs? if someone uses these elsewhere can they be welcomed here? ive been in groups where the answer is no to all of these

I’d be in favour of a space that is pro-left and left critical discussion. Overtly anti-left content should be removed. It’s not conducive to any kind of discussion. I don’t mind memes but I would be in favour of light touch moderation that discourages (especially American) political memes. I find US-centric content in particular sucks up all the oxygen out of the room. Would rather be seeing lighthearted stuff based on Marxist and anarchist critiques than a million “Trump is dumb” memes. Would love to see more moderators with power to remove posts, but I’d want folks to be light-handed and maybe cycle through frequently. As for language policing that’s very difficult. I’d probably suggest nudging the user of such problematic words to please consider not using those words. From there if the content is antagonistic hide from channel and if it’s just bothersome, encourage people to mute words so they don’t have to see it.

Ultimately, I’m not for any form of heavy-handed policing. I’d discourage banning users until they’ve become obvious trolls. I also don’t like long term authority and favour an authority that cycles, ideally randomly amongst those who are willing to moderate. A set of guiding principles is crucial for that to work. I’d also support new users being only able to reply but not root cast. Maybe to gain root casting permission you can either buy an NFT or something that supports the channel and created a collective treasury to be used for solidarity, community expenses etc. I think mods would also just gift that NFT to existing users and those who post a lot of great replies but can’t afford to mint the NFT. Just thinking out loud here.

thanks for your thoughts brother, i am in agreement with your points about US politics sucking all the air, plus it's especially important that we reject US-centering as part of anti-imperialist ideology i especially like the idea of NFTs that grant you root casting permissions. buying them with money seems like anti-left gatekeeping but we could iterate on that idea. i guess we kinda disagree on standards and policies. ive seen leftist discussion spaces torn apart by (among other things) letting libs play Blue Tucker Carlson ("just asking questions", trolling with no sincere intention to learn or change opinions). i think ive seen enough that it's important to me to have a stricter code of conduct, like one FB group im in that says basically "this place is for furthering leftist policy and education, if you don't want to learn and advance your praxis, it's not for you". some groups explicitly banned *publicly* supporting kamala or the DNC as well. just food for thought, we should agree on the rules.

That’s fair. I will say that, with respect to your third point, it’s going to depend on whether our goal is a space for existing leftists and all-in acolytes, or if there is any hope of drawing in the surrounding “progressive” liberals and “populist” (read: working class) conservatives. I’m not sure how many of these people exist on Farcaster but, and it’s a big butt 🍑, whether or not that’s our approach defines almost everything about how we shape participation in this space. I’m open to all versions, but we have to speak their names, and make a choice.

fully agreed on every bit of that, this is exactly why i decided it was time to discuss it! to me, what we decide is less important, as long as we decide
