I always found the idea that Reunion is France, Gran Canaria is Spain, and Madeira is Portugal, are dubious. Like… how are these different than colonies? Is it that they can participate in elections or something?

France has a lot of territories… Overseas regions have exactly the same status and laws as mainland regions.
