It turns out the way we remember older games looking amazing was because they were tailor-made for those tv screens. You can emulate this pretty well on modern hardware using shaders, but, especially when using older hardware (meaning game consoles and cartridges/cd-roms), the best option is to connect to CRT televisions directly. 

My most recent article is about emulation, and in preparation to write this, I've spent about a year getting pretty into the subcultures of retro revival, emulation, and game preservation. It's fascinating.
