Sometimes I wonder, do politicians actually think they can ever make a significant and lasting impact on illegal drug supply? They can't actually be that stupid, it's got to be purely for votes right? Where there is demand there will always be a supply if the price is right. This is demonstrated by the fact that they can't keep drugs out of prisons. It doesn't matter how tough you get, people will always get high and other people will always sell them the drugs they need to do it. Although now that I think about it, there is one drug the politicians managed to eliminate. That is regular ol' east coast powder heroin. It doesn't exist any more in any meaningful sense, it's all fentanyl now thanks to the incentives created by prohibition encouraging more potent drugs. Good job, I guess you can stop people from getting high if they are fucking dead. https://reason.com/2024/12/11/trumps-plan-to-fight-illegal-drugs-with-punitive-tariffs-makes-no-sense/

Perhaps better to legalize all drugs and simply apply reasonable tariffs on their import and then sales tax on distribution

You know prohibition may reduce one drug, but it just creates more dangerous alternatives without solving the root problem
