New dispensary opened near me. They have shake ounces for $4.20. That's less than I paid for a gram back in the day 🤣

The price for a gram had held steady for 20 years before it was legalized. Then legal competition drove the price down by a third on average

For awhile after legalization, it was still cheaper to get it from home growers, but it didn't take long for those prices to go down as capital flooded the market and we ended up with a glut of weed. Prices are still dropping, though this was a special for a grand opening. Prior to that, the cheapest I'd found them was 2 ounces for $35.

The competition definitely changes the dynamics. There’s convenance of legal dispensaries vs. whatever custom approach a dealer can offer to gain loyalty. (I.e home delivery or bonus amounts for going with them over others) I do wonder how many dealers have shifter their tactics like that in the wake of legalization? Then again there’s always just people who are lazy and whatever is more convenient will win out over anything else.

There's dispensaries that offer delivery now and more and more deals that the home grower can't beat. So most dealers shifted to dealing other stuff, and the only home growers really left are those who a really, really into growing themselves. I have two unused grow rooms in my basement and at full capacity, it's an extra $600/month in electricity, so it's not worth it anymore given how cheap legal weed is.

You’re definitely right about dealers moving on to other drugs where a profit margin still exists.
