Rousseau and Hume were contemporaries. Hume agreed with a lot of what Rousseau wrote, and when Rousseau got in hot water with the French government and the church, Hume invited him to come stay with him. That did not go well. Turns out Rousseau was a paranoid jerk and Hume had to kick him out, then publish his side of the story to clear his name. The entirety of the Western intellectual tradition is built on the works of a bunch of drama queens.

You ever heard about the Kant thing? I guess he had his servants wrap him up tightly in a shroud each night so he couldn't touch himself or have a wet dream. He was freakishly pious, especially for a guy who dismantled the 3 traditional arguments for the existence of God.
