I think the intentions of the movements were good, but like all movements, it got co-opted by consumer capitalism. It's still about fashion and being trending, which to me are sort of antithetical to slowing down.

Yes, I feel that. And like a true fashion bore I liked it better when people thought it weird that I (or, rather, my mum when I was little) shopped second hand :)
