a common theme across the 50+ interviews we've done in the last 10 days is that it is HARD for new users to get started, know where to cast, find their footing and like-minded people. starter packs, /gmfarcaster, FC newsletters, and finding a "onboarding buddy" help — what else? what needs to be better? how?

Agree channels v3. But they aren’t in Warpcast. They are a separate read-only client.

My bias is that I think community is the best growth mechanism for a social product. Channels as they are can’t really be used for a community, they can only be used for a community on Warpcast. Even then it’s not easy with the tools you’re given. A read-only client (like a website) could allow ANY user to consume what’s going on in a community (which is what most people want to do anyway) making community on-boarding easier. If something piques their interest, they could upgrade to the full Warpcast experience. Users gained in this way have different expectations. They will already have a strong purpose (ie contribute to community) and familiarity with community members, which should alleviate some of the problems you mentioned. Of course there are still improvements that can be made to Warpcast, but this could help the cold start problems.
