i was once asked by someone i respect deeply in tech what motivates me i said service, helping people the reply was “oh come on, what is it really?” lol disillusioned me

Tech used to be about introducing disruptive (and often free) software and information into people’s lives (and therefore increasing people’s freedoms), but then the valley lost its way and it became about silos and extracting as much as possible from users

lol. There’s also a related unhealthy obsession with measurements imo. Productivity and health optimization is a good example. Putting data over feelings

I’ve worked at the huge banks and now I run IT (including Service Desk) for a health company and it feels great knowing I’m at a company that’s helping to improve lives. Helping ppl is a very legitimate reason to motivate!
