a common theme across the 50+ interviews we've done in the last 10 days is that it is HARD for new users to get started, know where to cast, find their footing and like-minded people. starter packs, /gmfarcaster, FC newsletters, and finding a "onboarding buddy" help — what else? what needs to be better? how?

A big part of TikTok’s runaway success was ease of vitality for new users, new user content gets pushed to a lot of people so genuine engagement happens quickly. Would need some threshold of length / effort / proof of humanity or bots would take over the feed here... The full screen video format of TikTok also creates a more granular understanding of user taste so it’s easier to route content to the right groups though, more on that from @eugene here: https://www.eugenewei.com/blog/2020/9/18/seeing-like-an-algorithm

eugene is a phenomenal thinker. can't wait to read this, thanks for sharing. agree that TikTok's discoverability model (and human-centered video) shifts the traditional 90/9/1 power law to be more 80/15/5 — making every user become more engaged, active participant in the ecosystem of content.
