Was thinking about the code I wrote today. Realized there was an easier, simpler implementation on my train ride back home. Anyone else just have their code in their head all the time?

All the time. I usually have an open editor in my brain, solve what I’m working on entirely in my head, then just type it out when I’m at the keyboard later.

Who doesn't? I designed the cache for my backend API while driving home. It was a 3 hours trip so I had time to work on it mentally. Also I do a lot of coding while walking my dog in my head. Lots of good ideas while walking.

Sometimes your brain needs time to breathe. You do your best thinking when you’re not thinking at all

The best ways for solutions to come to me is when I’m NOT coding. Doing chores, taking a walk, letting my mind wander…BOOM! Solution. This helped me get out of that overworking mindset. Your mind will do background tasks on things you deem important while you’re giving your consciousness a break.

Yes, sometimes you figure the solution away from your computer. Feels great when that happens.

I frequently write code in my dreams that won't compile because it's become too large for the magic wizard who lives in the back of my brain to simulate.

If I'm stuck on some bug or complex problem, I also dream about my code. It always feels like a fever dream where i try a lot of things at the same time, in some rare cases i really come up with a solution in my dream
